Labor Day (Labor Day)

Description:

Emblem of the Agency of the Republika Srpska for the Development of Small and Medium Businesses
The International Labor Day is a symbol of international solidarity of workers and their struggle for their rights.

The history of the holiday begins with the events in Chicago in 1886, when the workers of this city demanded an eight-hour working day. The police then began shooting at the crowd, and five workers were later executed.

The first May Day demonstrations swept around the world in 1990, including in Ljubljana, Novi Sad and Zagreb, and in Belgrade the demonstration was first held in 1893 In 1912 in Bosnia and Herzegovina, 10 thousand people took part in demonstrations. Today, the holiday is celebrated in almost all European countries, it was celebrated in the SFRY, and is celebrated in each of the new Balkan states, including Bosnia and Herzegovina.

Bosnia and Herzegovina, like no other former Yugoslav republic, is characterized by May Day demonstrations. This is understandable: the country has the worst economic performance of all the new six countries. On the other hand, May Day is one of the factors uniting the country, divided as a result of the Dayton Agreements of 1995 into two almost independent states: along with it, only the New Year is celebrated throughout the country.
