Brankov Bridge
Brankov Bridge, Beograd, Serbia
Description:
Branko Bridge is the second largest bridge in Belgrade. It has a dual carriageway with three lanes in both directions, and consists of two separate structures. The length of the bridge is 450 m.
Externally, the bridge is a continuous huge steel beam, with a central span of 261 meters and side spans of 81.5 meters each. Nearly 90,000 cars cross the bridge every day. About forty years ago, due to heavy load, the Belgrade company Mostprojekt completed a project to double the capacity of the bridge.
The name of the bridge is unofficial, and seems indebted to a strange chain of events. Its official name during communist rule was "Bridge of Brotherhood and Unity", but this name was never remembered by the townspeople, and it became known as "Bridge on Branco Street".
However, when another writer, Branko Opić, committed suicide by jumping off the bridge in 1984, the current name was associated with the incident. Therefore, today it is not known in honor of which Branco bridge got its name.
