Clock Tower of Kalemegdan Fortress

kademegdan fortress, city of Belgrade, Serbia

Description:

The area of Kalemegdan is huge. The historical monument combines several dozen buildings that perfectly coexist with modern buildings. Along the perimeter, the fortress is surrounded by a beautiful park with centuries-old trees and a stone high fence.

The discoverers of Kalemegdan are the Romans. After them, the owners of the fortress were the Celts, Goths, Huns and even the Byzantines. Since the VII century, Kalemegdan passed to the current owners - the Serbs, who had to defend their right in battles with the Bulgarians and Hungarians. In the XVIII century, the fortress underwent minor changes. There was a church, statues and the main gate. In this form it has survived to our days.

The very first architectural wonder of the fortress, which immediately meets tourists, is the tower with the Sakhat-Kul clock. She came to Kalemegdan more than half a century ago. It looks like an observation tower made of white brick, on the roof of which the peak rises. In the center of the tower is a huge round clock. They've been working for over 300 years. When you get closer, you can hear how loud they are walking, beating every hour.
