Bayrakli mosque

11 Gosnar Jevremova, Beograd 11000, Serbia

Description:

Bayrakli Mosque is a monument of medieval architecture in the center of Belgrade.

The building is a single complex with a square base, a large dome and an adjacent minaret. The walls of the mosque are inscribed with excerpts from the Koran, filled with calligraphic Arabic letters. On the left side of the entrance there is a spiral staircase leading to the gallery.

During its history, this building has experienced several wars. There was a time when it served the Christian faith. In March 2004, the Bayrakli Mosque was set on fire by angry youths, breaking all windows and smashing furniture. The library was burned to the ground. The mosque itself has not yet been fully restored.
