Manasiya Monastery

Monastery Manasia, 280, Despotovac, Central Serbia.

Description:

The Monastery of Manasia is located on the bank of the Resava River, near the city of Despotovac.

The temple was built by the despot Stefan Lazarevich, the son of Prince Lazar Khrebelyanovich. Construction lasted 14 years, from 1406 to 1418.

During the Ottoman rule it was destroyed several times by the Turks.

However, now the monastery is fully restored and is engaged in active economic activity. The monastery owes its revival to Russian immigration, when after the revolution many nuns and monks came to Serbia and began the restoration of abandoned and destroyed monasteries.

The monastery looks like an impregnable fortress - powerful walls about two meters thick and eleven towers around the perimeter, there was a moat. The largest, most massive and main tower is called the Despot Tower.

Monasia Monastery is the owner of the best monuments of Serbian painting of the Middle Ages.
