Monument to the Winner in Kamelegdan Fortress

kalemegdan fortress, city of Belgrade, Serbia

Description:

The monument was conceived by the government of Belgrade in the early XX century. Officials wanted him to represent freedom from Turkish rule. The work on the creation of the monument was entrusted to the sculptor I. Melshtrovych, but he did not have time to do it as the First World War began. The sculptor continued immediately after its completion. When the monument was ready, it symbolized victory not only over the Turks, but also over Austria-Hungary.

The monument was a young man holding a falcon in one hand and a sword in the other. The young man in bronze is completely naked. When the monument was installed, Belgrade residents began to resent its appearance. They did not want to look at a naked man, even as a monument. And then the monument was demolished. It was restored to its place in 1928.
