Nikola Pasic Square
Trg Nikole Pa&scaron ić a, Beograd 11000, Serbia
Description:
Nikola Pasic Square is one of the central squares of Belgrade. It was named after the mayor, prime minister of Serbia and prime minister of Yugoslavia. The square used to be named after Karl Marx and Friedrich Engels.
The square was built in the 1950s as part of a massive reorganisation project for Terazije Square. The terrain was so hilly that it was necessary to move a huge amount of land to make construction possible.
The monument to Nikol Pasic was erected here in the early 1990s. When the statue was to be erected, an unexpected idea arose about the return of the natural hillyness of this territory in order to install the monument on such a very original pedestal. But ultimately this idea was abandoned.
As for the features of the architecture, the square is dominated by massive buildings in the style of socialist classicism. These include the Trade Union building, one of the largest fountains in Belgrade, the Museum of the History of Yugoslavia, and the City Hall of Belgrade. Today, the pedestrian part of the square is used for various public events. For example, for flower fairs, honey and books.
