Republic Square

Republic Square, Belgrade, Serbia

Description:

The Republic Square is the main square in Belgrade and the main meeting place for young people. It houses the National Theatre, the National Museum, the monument to Prince Michael Obrenović III and the monument to Branislav Nusic.

The square in its current form begins its history after the demolition of the Istanbul Gate and the construction of the National Theatre building began. The gate was built by the Austrians at the beginning of the XVIII century. It was the largest and most beautiful gate at the time, and the city was surrounded by a moat. Through them was the road to Istanbul, hence the name.

After the establishment of Serbian influence in the country and the demolition of the gate, the Republic Square remained in a partially destroyed state for a long time, and its restoration began only after the opening of the monument to Prince Michael.
