Svetozar Markovich University Library

71 Bulevar kralja Aleksandra, Belgrade 135505, Serbia

Description:

The Svetozar Markovic University Library is the central library in the library system of the University of Belgrade, named after the Serbian politician of the XIX century. It is located on King Alexander Boulevard, near the law school.

This library was built thanks to the financial infusion of businessman and philanthropist Andrew Carnegie in 1921. The modern building, which it still occupies, dates back to 1926. During the First World War, Belgrade was one of the three "front" cities where he built libraries.

The library of the University of Belgrade is the largest in the country, as it holds 1.5 million books. The services of the institution are used not only by employees and students of this university, but also by two other higher educational institutions. Members of research institutes can also receive a subscription.

The library is called the national library due to its extensive collection of books by Serbian writers, which also includes a wide range of international studies and fiction.
