Wouk and Dosite Museum

21 Gosnar Jevremova, Beograd 11000, Serbia

About the company:

The Vuk and Dositej Museum is one of the most important memorial museums in Belgrade, the capital of Serbia. The museum displays the life, work and legacy of Vuk Stefanovic Karadzic, a writer and reformer of the Serbian language system, and Dositej Obradovic, Serbia’s first minister of education.

Founded in 1949, the museum is housed in the former building of the Higher School in Belgrade, the first institution in Serbia providing higher education and founded in 1808 by Obradovic during his service as Minister of Education. In this regard, the building is also called the Lyceum of Dositej, and Karadzic, in turn, was one of the first students of this institute.

Subsequently, the Higher School became the University of Belgrade.

The museum was built in 1739 and is one of the eight oldest surviving residential buildings in Belgrade today.

The building of the Vuka and Dositej Museum has become an important cultural and historical monument of Belgrade and the whole of South-Eastern Europe. It consists of two floors and an attic, the restoration of which was made only three years ago.

The upper floor of the building is intended for an exhibition dedicated to Karadzic. The exhibits include items belonging to the writer: travel bags, glasses, holsters, smoking accessories. The first floor is dedicated to Obradovich. Unfortunately, after the bombing of Belgrade in 1914, very few of his personal belongings survived.
