Clock Tower
Market Street, Victoria, Mahe, Seychelles
Description:
The Clock Tower, located on Market Street, was erected in the early 20th century and acts as a historical and architectural monument. It is an iron structure made in the form of a cone, having a height of 30 meters and a diameter of the base - 5 meters. At the top of the tower is a magnificent observation deck, which opens a wonderful panorama of Victoria - the capital of Mahe island. Every day at 12:00 from the tower comes the chimes, which notifies the residents of the city about the onset of the lunch break. In 1975, the building was restored - the interior decoration was updated and the dial mechanisms were replaced.
Near the clock tower is the temple of the Immaculate Conception and the Museum of Natural History. These facilities are an integral part of the tour to the island. Soon, the Mahe government wants to open a gallery at the top of the clock tower, which will feature works by local artists and artisans. This will raise the cultural and spiritual level of the local population.
