Denis Island
60 miles north of Mahe Island, Seychelles
Description:
Denis Island is a tiny coral island belonging to the Seychelles group. It is located about a hundred kilometers north of Mahe, the largest island of this group. Denis is the most remote and isolated island of the archipelago.
Denis Island can be called miniature - its total area is less than one and a half square kilometers. This piece of land was discovered in 1773 by the French navigator Denis de Trobriand, after whom the island was named. For a long time Denis belonged to France, but then became part of the Republic of Seychelles.
Denis is densely covered with coconut palms and tropical vegetation - he literally drowns in greenery. There is a private hotel on the island that can accommodate and serve no more than 25 tourists. Near the hotel there is a small airfield for light aircraft, and on the north bank of Denis rises an old lighthouse, built in 1910 - this is the only attraction of the island.
