Anuradhapura
Description:
The oldest city in Sri Lanka. The first settlements on its territory appeared in the V century BC.
Located 205 km from Colombo.
Anuradhapura is a city of Buddhist holy places. There are 8 of them: the Bo tree and seven dagobas (in Sri Lankan architecture, a Buddhist dome-shaped mausoleum, a structure that stores sacred relics).
The Bo tree is the most famous and ancient tree in Sri Lanka. It grew out of a tree branch under which Prince Sidhartha Gautama attained enlightenment.
This is the most popular place for meditation on the island.
