Elephant shelter
Description:
The Pinnawala Elephant Shelter is located in the southwestern part of Sri Lanka, 13 km from the city of Kegalle. In 1975, the shelter was opened by the Department of Wildlife Conservation of Sri Lanka in order to rescue elephants abandoned by their parents in the jungle. Over 4 decades, about 100 elephants have appeared in the shelter - the largest "domesticated" flock of these animals in the world! Today, the shelter is one of the favorite places for tourists where everyone can:
- Elephant riding;
- feed them;
- And even to participate in the bathing of elephants!
The territory of the shelter is a picturesque former coconut plantation on the Maha Oya River.
