Port Galle
Galle Harbour, Galle 80,000, Sri Lanka
Description:
The bay, in which the port city of Galais is located, was discovered in 1505, when a team of a Portuguese ship drifted here during a storm. The bay in which the sailors were found was not marked on the nautical charts that existed at that time. The Portuguese called it "galle", which translates as "rooster". And this is not accidental, because the first sign that the new land was inhabited was the chants of the rooster. Gradually, the Portuguese began to explore unexplored territory, and by 1589 they had turned the harbor into a fortified port.
Half a century later, in 1640, as a result of a military clash, power in Halle passed to the Dutch, and in 1663, the construction of a new fort was completed on the site of the destroyed Portuguese port. This picturesque granite structure has survived to this day and amazes travelers with its power. Dutch names of city streets, lighthouse, town hall, cute stone houses in the European style are still preserved - they create a completely unique atmosphere perfectly inscribed in the surrounding seascape.
