Statue of Aukan Buddha
Aukana, 51 km south of Anuradhapura, Sri Lanka
Description:
Aukana Buddha is considered one of the best sculptural images of Buddha in South Asia.
The 13-meter statue was carved from solid stone around the fifth century and is attributed to King Datusena (459-477). The huge size of the figure did not affect the realism and proportionality of the image. The sculpture is said to be so perfect that raindrops falling from the Buddha’s nose land with millimeter precision in the middle between his feet.
Characteristic of images of the Buddha face, devoid of emotions, nevertheless unusually expressive. This person with his eyes closed wants to see in detail. The left hand of the Buddha is pressed to the shoulder, the right hand is raised, but the gesture is more like a modern one. This is unusual for this kind of image.
Although, in fairness, it is worth noting that the statue of Buddha in Aucan over time became a kind of model for later masters sculpting sculptures of the standing Buddha.
