The Golden Cave Temple

dambulla, 148 km from Colombo, near Matale, Sri Lanka

Description:

A huge Buddhist temple was carved into the rock around the 1st century BC. It is a sacred place for all Buddhists, a pilgrimage center and at the same time a functioning monastery.

The temple is a complex of several caves located at an altitude of about 350 meters. Each of them is not only painted with pictures-descriptions of the life path of the Buddha, but also contains a large number of Buddha statues. According to various sources, there are about 153 statues, many more than 2000 years old. Almost half of them are covered with gold, which is why the temple was called “Golden”.

At the base of the mountain, in which the temple is located, you will also be greeted by a huge statue of Buddha, surrounded by flower beds. The size and color of this place, without exaggeration, is impressive.
