Cataragama Temple Complex

Kataragama, Sri Lanka

Description:

The temple complex in Kataragama is a place of sacred pilgrimage for Hindus, Buddhists and Muslims of Sri Lanka.

Here are the stupas of Kiri Vihara, the Hindu temples of Kataragama Maha Devale and Sella Kataragama, the sacred tree of Maha Bodhi, as well as the mosque of Masjab-ul-Khizr.

Every year in July, the Kataragham Peraher religious festival is held here for two weeks.

The walls and ceilings of the temples are painted with mythological subjects. There are several bell towers in the complex, and in the central temple there is a sacred altar, access to which only priests have.
