River Menik Ganga

Tangalle, Sri Lanka

Description:

The Menik Ganga River is a small river considered sacred by locals.

The Menik Ganga, or as it is also called the “river of gems”, divides the city of Katagarama into two parts. On the northern shore there is a sacred zone with a complex of temples of various religions.

Sacred ablution is held in the river during the religious festival held here annually in July. Locals say that a person can receive healing from the waters of this river, and explain this by the medical properties of the roots of trees growing along the river.

The river itself is not very deep, its greatest width is about two hundred meters.

In the rainy season, the river is very much spilled, and in the dry season it becomes shallow.
