National Day of Sweden (Swedish Flag Day)

Description:

Swedish flag
It has been officially celebrated as a national holiday since 1983. The holiday is associated with two historical dates: on June 6, 1523, Gustav Erikson, who led the anti-Danish popular uprising in 1521, was elected king of Sweden under the name Gustav I Vasa; on June 6, 1809, a new constitution was adopted, which was in force until January 1, 1975.

Since 1916, June 6 has been celebrated as Swedish Flag Day. The exact age of the Swedish flag is unknown, but the oldest images of a blue cloth with a yellow cross date back to the sixteenth century.

In accordance with a royal decree of 1569, the yellow cross was always to be depicted on Swedish military standards and banners, since the coat of arms of Sweden was a blue shield divided into four parts by a golden cross. The colors and pattern of the flag are described in the 1982 Flag Act.
