Helsingborg

2 countries in one day, from Denmark to Sweden

Description:

We offer you a unique opportunity to visit 2 cities in one day: Helsingør (Danish Helsingør) on the Danish side of the Øresund Strait and Helsinborg (Swedish Helsinborg) on the Swedish side. Both of these cities are located at the narrowest point of the Øresund Strait: only 4 km separate the Danish side from the Swedish side, but they are very different cities, with different history, traditions, architecture and people living here.

Helsinger, founded in the early 15th century, today boasts a population of 60,000 people, while the Swedish Helsinger is considered almost the oldest city in Scandinavia, founded in the 11th century and, according to legend, it was here that the first Viking fortress was located. Both cities are similar to each other. However, more than 160 nationalities live in the Swedish Helsinger than the Danish Helsinger can boast. We invite you to take a trip so that you can see these differences and get a better idea of these Scandinavian cities.

Our journey will start from your hotel. We will head north from Copenhagen to the city of Helsinger, where the castle, sung by Shakespeare in his famous tragedy “Hamlet”, is located. Shakespeare described Kronborg Castle in detail, the scene of the tragedy, although he had never been there. We will learn how and why this happened during our walk through the castle. Not many people know where the tomb of the Danish Prince Hamlet is, but we will show you during our tour. More than 300,000 pilgrims come here every year in hopes of seeing the shadow of Father Hamlet, strolling through the dark and intricate castle dungeons, as well as paying tribute to the hero Holga Danin, sleeping in the dungeons of Kronborg Castle.

First we will go to the historic center of Helsingör, where we will visit the ancient Carmelite monastery, a building of the 15th century, and also hear the story of the “haunted house”. From here we will go to the town hall to see one of the surviving streets of the Middle Ages in the heart of the city of Helsingera, and at the same time take a look at the building, which for 400 years was charged “Oresund toll” – money that was paid by ship captains for passage through the Oresund Strait. This duty fed many Danish kings for 400 years and was one of the most important revenues of the city treasury.

Walking along the pedestrian street past the City Hall building and numerous shops, we will go to the mysterious Kronborg Castle, listed by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site. Walking through the royal apartments, we will see how the kings of the past lived, feasted and entertained, learn how the castle was modernized and rebuilt through the centuries, who and at what time lived in it. We will definitely visit the hero Holge Danin, who stands guard over the peace and well-being of Denmark, as well as stroll through the casemates - the intricate castle dungeons, where, if we are lucky, we can meet the shadow of Hamlet's father.

So, full of Danish stories and legends, we take a ferry to Sweden, where we are waiting for an adventure in the city of Helsingborg. The fact that you are in another city and even another country feels as soon as you get off the ferry. A walk through this city we start from the tower "Chernon", a building of the 12th century. Here we will talk about the difficult relationship between Danes and Swedes, as well as the circumstances under which the original Danish territory of Helsingborg became Swedish. Then we will climb the Chernon Tower and from a height of 35 meters the whole city of Helsingborg will be in the palm of your hand. Even today, you can see the famous tower, as well as the places where the local church, chapel and moat surrounding these buildings were located.

Enjoying the local scenery from above, we will go to the center of the city of Helsingborg and stop at the fountain of Tycho Brahe - a famous Danish astronomer and scientist, learn the main milestones of his life, as well as because of what sparked a conflict between him and King Christian 4 m, as a result of which the scientist had to leave Copenhagen forever and leave for Prague.

It is impossible to pass by the Church of St. Mary, where we will learn, and perhaps even see, how the Lutheran service goes. On our way we will also meet the oldest building of Helsingborg - the house of Jacob Hansen - a residential building that has survived to this day since the mid-17th century.

Our last stop today will be the Town Hall Square and the City Hall building, where we will meet one of the greatest Swedish commanders who managed to win one of the battles of Peter the Great himself. Here you will learn the history of ferry service between Denmark and Sweden, which did not escape curious situations regarding the ban on the import of alcohol from Denmark.

There is an option of excursion without transfer from Copenhagen. In this case, you will be met by a guide already in Helsingör and the cost of the excursion will be 470 euros for 2 people, including tickets for the ferry Helsingör - Helsingör - Helsingör, entrance tickets to Kronborg Castle and the Chernon Tower, guide services for 5 hours. Food and drinks are not included in the price.

This is an author’s excursion, during which you will visit the most important places in the cities of Helsinger and Helsingborg, as well as learn interesting facts from the history of their creation, see how the kings of the Middle Ages lived and learn the details of their lives. You can admire the breathtaking landscapes and get acquainted with the cultures of the two countries in one day. No doubt it will be a busy day, but also a memorable one!
