St. Matthew's Church

Ystadsgatan 50, 214 44 Malmo, Sweden

Description:

The Church of St. Matthew in Malmo is one of the most unusual temples in Scandinavia. Its characteristic feature is a departure from the classical architectural solutions inherent in most Orthodox churches.

St. Matthew’s Church was built in 1983 by architect Stan Samuelson. Its design, developed for this temple, turned on its head the entrenched stereotypes concerning the architectural style of such buildings. Since the church is located in a park, Samuelson decided to make its architectural design a symbolic extension of the trees. The roof, lying on six columns, its shape resembles the crown of a tree. Most of it is made of colored glass, which gives the interior special lighting.

In the middle of the temple stands an altar of white marble, surrounded by benches located in the form of a semicircle. The altar is decorated with handmade multicolored ceramic tiles.

At first, not all Orthodox parishioners liked such bold futuristic decisions, but over time the passions subsided, and now services are regularly held here. The temple is very popular with tourists.
