Black Bridge

Tjorn Bridge, Tjorn, Sweden

Description:

Chorn Bridge is a cable-stayed bridge that, together with two small bridges, connects the mainland on the west coast of Sweden with the island of Chorn. The length of this bridge is 664 meters, the width of the span is 366 meters, and the height above the water is 45 meters.

The history of the Chornsky Bridge is not full of interesting facts, while the history of its predecessor, the Almensky Bridge, is much more dramatic. This arch-type steel bridge was commissioned in the summer of 1960. The main span of the bridge was 280 meters, and its throughput capacity allowed to serve more than 10,000 cars per day. Everyone was satisfied, until in January 1980, a large bulk carrier rammed the upper arch of the bridge - the progress was hampered by darkness and thickened fog. Taking into account the transport importance of the bridge, it was decided to urgently replace it with a more reliable bridge. And it took less than two years - in early November 1981, the grand opening of the Chorn Bridge took place, which was honored by the presence of King Carl Gustav the Sixteen of Sweden.

The new Chernsky Bridge surpasses its predecessor both in terms of dimensions and reliability. There are two lanes and two sidewalks for pedestrians, fenced off from the road by a metal barrier for pedestrian safety.
