Drottningtorgen Square

Drottningtorget, 211 25 Malmo, Sweden

Description:

Drottningtorget ("Royal Square") is a large square in the center of the Swedish city of Malmo. The square owes its name to Queen Frederick Wilhelmina of Baden (1781-1826).

Drottningtorgen has a rich history dating back to the Middle Ages, when the main street of the city of Adelgatan, leading to the square, was the most popular trading place in Malmo. Peasants brought here for sale their crops, artisans - their products, and fishermen - their catch. The current appearance of the square acquired in the early 19th century, when several old buildings were demolished and new buildings were erected, which became a place of market trade. Many of these buildings in the northern part of the square have survived to this day.

Now the trade on the square is not as active as many years ago - for the most part, souvenirs and jewelry are sold here. Shoppers prefer shops and boutiques located nearby. Drottningthorgen is popular among tourists due to its color of antiquity. There are also many restaurants and cafes where you can have a snack, recuperating after a walk.
