One king, two kings...
Description:
Today, Sweden is a constitutional monarchy that became hereditary in the XVI century, although aristocratic families and dynasties existed long before that. Some kings played such a significant role in the history of Sweden that monuments were erected in their honor in the heart of the capital of the kingdom. Let's try to figure out: who were all these Carls and Gustavas?
During our walk we will stop at some monuments to kings and queens and talk about what these individuals of blue blood remembered ordinary Swedes. We will learn who founded Stockholm, when and why, who ordered the establishment of the opera and the National Museum, why Eric XIV was not the fourteenth at all, and why the monuments to the monarchs in the Royal Garden are called “the lion among flower pots” and “the flower pot among lions”. We will also discuss the famous Charles XII, who in Sweden was practically raised on a pedestal, but at the same time is invariably associated with nationalism. And, of course, not without legends: who was the first Cinderella of Sweden? What do we know about the Monarch Casanova? Where did the first Bernadotte try to escape? Where is the treasure of the unknown princess hidden?
