The old town of Gamla Stan - the affairs of days gone by
Description:
Gamla Stan is the heart of Stockholm. Want to wander through the narrow streets that annually attract thousands of tourists and look into the no less attractive non-tourist corners of the Old Town? Then, welcome to my author's walk!
Where did the name Old Town come from, and this is not one island as many people think, this name unites four different islands, and I will introduce you to each of them. We will talk about the founding of the city and try to understand why every year the islands of Stockholm increase in size and the water recedes. We will visit the island where 17 Swedish monarchs are buried, I will tell about the fate of Charles XII, the enemy of the great Peter the Great and show the place of his burial. We will talk about the Swedish monarchy and the role of parliament in the fate of royalty.
Let's wander around the island of the Holy Spirit, and I will tell you what was discovered by archaeologists during excavations under the Parliament building. Let us look at a tiny island in Lake Malaren, at the mention of which the inhabitants of the capital sigh and indulge in the memories of youth. Then you will see the narrowest 90-centimeter street in Stockholm, we will come to stroke the smallest sculpture on the head, the boy whose caring citizens always hurry to dress for the weather.
Are you interested in what is hidden from prying eyes? Then I will show you the location of a secret room preserved from the Dominican Monastery in the Old Town and a unique cell of Franciscan monks on Knight's Island. You can learn all this and more from our historic tour of the Old Town!
Duration of the tour: 2 hours. The cost of the tour: 50 euros / hour. Payment in cash after the tour.
