St. John's Church

Kammakargatan 12 111 40 Stockholm, Sweden

Description:

The Church of St. John with a round 60-meter tower by architect Axel Anderberg impresses any visitor of the city. Locals love and appreciate this amazing church.

The church is built in the Art Nouveau style, which already distinguishes it from many other temples, because such a phenomenon is not often found. The brick red church is also popularly called the “Church of Roses”, as it has many carved wooden and stone roses in its interior.

The church was built on the site of a wooden chapel. It was assumed that the church would be built in the style of classicism – in 1783, its construction began on the project of Ian Erik Rein. However, the church was not completed due to the influence of newfangled currents from abroad. Karl Meller built a neo-Gothic church in 1883, and since then its inhabitants remember it just like this.

The windows of the cathedral depict scenes from the Bible, Jesus on the cross, Mary and the Apostle John.
