Since 1981, the palace has been the residence of the Swedish kings. In 1991, it was included in the UNESCO World Heritage List.
Drottningholm was built by King Johan III of Sweden. He created a castle for his wife, Katherine Jagiellonca. In 1662, the castle burned down, but Queen Hedwig Eleanor a year later ordered the construction of a new palace in its place.
The construction of the existing Drottningholm building was led by Tessina architects – father and son. The architectural ensemble of the palace is represented by the Baroque style. Behind the palace is a unique court theater. It is one of the oldest operating theaters in the world. The palace is surrounded by a magnificent park that includes French gardens with gazebos and labyrinths and English gardens with picturesque lawns and ponds.
