Arstabroarna Bridges

Arstabroarna, Stockholm, Sweden

Description:

Arstabroarna is two parallel railway bridges in Stockholm, Sweden. Passing over the riverbed of the Arstaviken, they connect the large island of Södermalm with the southern part of the continent.

The East Bridge, the oldest of the two, often referred to as the Å rstabron ("Arst Bridge"), is still in operation 80 years after its opening in 1929. The massive concrete structure of the arched bridge rises 26 meters above the river. Designed by renowned Swedish architect Kirill Johansson, this bridge is now recognized as a historic landmark.

Designed by prominent English architect Sir Norman Foster, the West Bridge is 833 metres long and 20 metres wide. The new bridge was opened in 2005, after which a new suburban station Å rstaberg was built just south of both bridges. The new bridge is twice as wide as its older brother, while the concrete supports are much thinner. At the insistence of Sir Foster, the bridge was painted in the traditional red for English architecture, which did not quite fit with the aesthetic taste of the locals, who nicknamed this bridge Falukorv (a kind of Swedish sausage, similar in color to the West Bridge).
