Monument to Gustav III
Description:
The sculpture was created by architect Johan Tobias Sergel in 1808. The statue expresses a triumphant royal step to his native land after winning the war with Russia in 1788-90.
The architect was inspired by the ancient statue of Apollo of Belvedere. According to surviving documents, his own description of the statue was: This is the moment in which he holds a sword in one hand, but the olive branch in the other, as a sign of reconciliation. He's wearing a navy uniform.
King Gustav III was assassinated in 1792.
