Monument Saint George and the Dragon, Gamla Stan, Stockholm

Description:

The monument "St. George and the Dragon", installed in Gamla Stan in Stockholm, is a bronze copy of the wooden sculpture of the architect Bernt Notke, who worked in the city in the XV century.

St. George is considered the patron saint of Stockholm. The wooden sculpture is located in the church of St. Nicholas. It is made of expensive wood and covered with gold.

In a small town square, a copy of it was installed in 1912 in honor of the anniversary of the Battle of Brückenberg with the Danes. Sculpture cast by O. Meyer.

St. George in this sculpture symbolizes Swedish masculinity, and the Dragon symbolizes Danish aggression. In this sculptural group there is also a princess who depicts Sweden and Stockholm seeking protection.
