Storthuriet Square
Description:
The name Storturjet is translated from Swedish as “Big Square”. Most of the houses on the square were built in the XVII-XVIII centuries, but there are earlier buildings.
One of the most famous buildings on the square is the Stock Exchange building. This is a beautiful building of 1773-1776, the time of the Swedish king Gustav III. Today, the building houses the Swedish Academy of Sciences, the Nobel Library and the Nobel Museum. The square is decorated with a large fountain.
Stortorget Square is also associated with a very sad event for Sweden: the “Bloodbath” of 1520, when 90 fighters for the country’s independence from the Danish occupiers were beheaded here.
