Stockholm Storchurcan Cathedral
Stockholm, Gamla Stan, Trongzund, 1
Description:
Stockholm Cathedral, aka Storchurcan, or St. Nicholas Cathedral, is rightly called the most significant temple of Stockholm. It is located in Gamla Stan, the Old Town of Stockholm.
The history of the temple begins in the 13th century - on this site stood a small church built by the founder of the city Jarl Birger. A little later the Basilica of St. Nicholas was built in its place.
Storchurcan Cathedral was rebuilt many times until it acquired its current appearance. Previously, the temple had a facade in the Gothic style, later it was demolished and built a new, Baroque style. In the 18th century, a bell tower 66 meters high was added to the Storchurcan church. In the temple there are famous works of art – the painting “The Last Judgment”, the sculpture of 1489 “St. George with a snake”.
St. Nicholas Cathedral is the site of coronations and weddings of Swedish monarchs. There are still services every Sunday, the temple is open to everyone.
