Vasa Museum

Galä rvarvsvä gen 14, 115 21 Stockholm, Sweden

About the company:

Vasa is the only surviving sailing ship of the early XVII century. It was built between 1625 and 1628 by decree of the Swedish king Gustav II Adolf.

The design of the ship was created by the Dutch shipbuilder Henrik Hubertsson. More than a thousand trees were cut down for the construction of the ship, and more than four hundred people were employed in the construction - the best carpenters, painters, blacksmiths ... This magnificent ship was to become the flagship of the Swedish Navy. Richly decorated and well-armed, Vasa aroused the admiration of both the residents of Stokolm and representatives of the powers hostile to Sweden.

However, this promising ship sank on its maiden voyage on August 10, 1628. The investigation showed that the cause of the disaster were errors made during the design of the ship. The Vasa Ship Museum was opened on Jurgården Island in 1990. It is now one of the most visited museums in Stockholm.
