The Monastery of St. Brigittes
vadstena (east coast of Lake Vettern), Sweden
Description:
Brigitte Birgersdotter was born into an aristocratic family in 1303. From an early age, she was visited by visions, in one of which God commanded her to create an order. Then, with the help of King Magnus and his wife, Brigitte founded a monastery in Wadsten.
In the Middle Ages, the abbey was a center of pilgrimage, which is why it received the name "Rome of the North". The abbey is a fusion of architectural styles of revival and Gothic. Inside the monastery are the remains of St. Brigitte, as well as late medieval sculptures.
Since 1829, the Abbey Church has been used as the parish church of Vadsten. It now houses a unique collection of medieval art.
