Andermatt

Damn bridge

The bridge is located on the river Reuss near the village of Andermatt in the Alps

Description:

The Devil's Bridge is the name of three bridges built in a gorge over the Reuss River in the Alps. The bridge is known as the place where during the Swiss campaign defeated the French Suvorov. Also, the bridge attracts attention with its location at a 20-meter height above the seething stream.

The first wooden bridge appeared on this site in 1230. In 1595, a stone bridge was built, the construction of which could not be completed for a long time. According to legend, the stormy flow interfered with the construction of the bridge and constantly demolished all buildings. Then the devil offered his help, on the condition that he would take the soul of the first one who passed through it. After the construction was completed, the residents outsmarted the line by letting the goat bridge pass. In addition to the name of the bridge, there are also cave paintings of the devil and goat, painted by residents in memory of the legend.
