EuroAirport Basel-Mulhouse-Freiburg
Description:
Basel-Mulhouse-Freiburg is a unique international airport owned simultaneously by two countries - France and Switzerland. It is located on the border of the two states, between the Swiss Basel and the French city of Mulhouse.
The idea to create a joint Franco-Swiss airport was born in the thirties of the twentieth century, but the construction prevented the Second world war. As a result, this unique project was implemented only in 1946, and in 1949 a corresponding agreement was signed for the joint management of the airport and the land plot. To emphasize the unusualness of the idea, even the traditional term "airport" was replaced by "euro-airport".
Today, Basel-Mulhouse-Freiburg is an important air gateway to the European Union and the largest transport hub in Europe. During the year, the airport carries more than five million passengers and 104,000 tons of cargo. The location of the airport is extremely convenient for passengers of both countries - a railway and several highways lead to the airport. Switzerland plans to build tramways by 2016.
