Bellinzona

Sasso Carbaro Fortress

600 meters southeast of Belinzone on top of a rocky hill, Switzerland

Description:

The town of Bellinzona is located at the foot of the Swiss Alps and welcomes everyone who is not indifferent to ancient castles and medieval city quarters.

There is not one ancient fortress in the city. Being almost on the border with Italy, this city has long been a kind of apple of discord between the Milanese aristocracy and Switzerland and, of course, needed powerful fortifications. The castle of Sasso Carbaro, located a short distance from the city, is less known to tourists than the more popular Castelgrande. However, it, like the others, is included in the UNESCO World Heritage List.

Quite compact, it was built later than the rest of the city fortifications, in the 15-16 centuries. It has a square shape, two square towers are located at the corners, there is also a higher observation tower, living quarters were placed in the left and right wings.

Nowadays everything is provided for the convenience of tourists. On the rocky mountain, the fortress has a convenient parking. Inside you can walk, there is also a museum with historical and archaeological expositions.

You can visit the castle from 10 to 20 hours, the entrance is free.
