Visconti Castle

Via al Castello, 6600 Locarno, Switzerland

Description:

Not too often you can see that right in the middle of the city stands a real medieval fortress. As a rule, such structures are located on elevations or at some distance from the central streets, moreover, most of them have reached our days in a destroyed form. However, the castle of Visconti in Locarno is somewhat different from many of its counterparts and causes constant interest among travelers. Despite the partial destruction, the castle gives the impression of a single ensemble that has survived more than one reconstruction and retained its uniqueness.

Visconti Castle was built in the XV century by representatives of the noble family of Visconti, for many years ruled Milan. Today, the castle continues to play almost the same role as in the Middle Ages. Here ancient interiors are preserved, decorated with amazing objects of antiquity, and in lush halls secular events are often held.

One of the main functions of the castle, in addition to its architectural value, is a museum, which displays objects from the Bronze Age and the Roman period. Perhaps the main value of the museum is a magnificent collection of antique glass. Historians believe that in Roman times this area played a key role in the production of glass. In addition, the exhibition presents other periods of the history of the city, and in the labyrinth of the castle is located a small Locarno theater.
