Mount Jungfrau

3984 Lauterbrunnen, Switzerland

Description:

Mount Jungfrau with a height of more than 4000 meters above sea level is considered the third highest among the mountains of the Bernese Alps. In 2001, the mountain was added to the UNESCO World Heritage List.

The name of Jungfrau Mountain literally translates as "virgin". This name was given to the nuns of Interlaken, who lived in a monastery at the foot of the mountain.

This mountain is very beautiful and peculiar: in its north you can see snowy peaks, in the west - snowless expanses, in the south - glaciers, and in the east - eternal snow. The foot of the mountain was formed from crystalline, the lower parts from limestone, and the top from igneous rocks.

Under the top of the mountain there is a geophysical observatory called the Sphinx, whose workers study the atmosphere, lithosphere and glaciosphere. In the mountain is the Ice Palace, in which everything is carved out of ice. At the foot of the mountain lies the village of Wengen, which is a ski resort.

The first to climb to the top of the mountain Swiss Jerome Mayer and Johann Rudolf in 1811. Since then, there is a second name for the mountain - "Madame Mayer".
