Munsterplatz 1, 3000 Bern, Schweiz

Description:

Bern Cathedral - Protestant Cathedral - is located in the southern part of the old part of Bern. This is the highest religious building in the country included in the list of UNESCO World Heritage Sites.

The late architecture of the cathedral is a three-nave basilica, the altar and choirs of which have apses in the form of five sides of the octagon. The bell tower of the cathedral has a height of 100.6 m, the main bell weighs about 10 tons and has a diameter of 247 cm.

The first church on the site of the current cathedral was built during the founding of Bern. In the XIII century. with the growth of the size and welfare of the city, its building was replaced by a larger structure with three naves and a bell tower. In the XV century it was decided to build a new large temple, the construction of which lasted more than 100 years.

The entrance to the cathedral is decorated with a beautiful bas-relief composition of 47 large statues, the originals of which are stored in the Historical Museum of Bern, the work of master Erhard Küng, depicting paintings of the Last Judgment. There are also 170 smaller sculptures on the bas-relief – these are genuine works of the XV-XVI centuries.

The most interesting details of the interior: furniture of the XVI century, stained glass and choirs. Almost all of the stained glass windows date back to the XV century. Exceptions are only two of them, the work of the XIX century.

The tower of the cathedral is open to all who want to admire the most beautiful views.
