River Aare

Bern, Switzerland

Description:

The Swiss river Aare, which is the left tributary of the Rhine, originates in the Bernese Alps. The length of the river is 295 kilometers, and the area of the basin is about 18 thousand square kilometers. In the upper reaches, the river is a mountain stream that flows through Lake Brienze and Thun. In the valley of Gasli formed Handek waterfall 46 meters high. The river washes the cities of Bern, Arau and Solothurn.

An amazing place, definitely worth a visit, is the Aare gorge about one and a half kilometers long and up to 180 meters deep. The narrowest place of the gorge reaches only 1 meter. A tourist path is built here, along which crowds of tourists go to look at the milk waters of the Aare River. On the tablets installed here, a lot of interesting information about the gorge is written. For example, in the gorge there are 2 entrances to the bunker, built in 1940. They housed the headquarters of the 3rd Army Corps of the Swiss Army during the war. The premises have now been dismantled.
