Alt-Bubenberg Castle

Switzerland, canton of Bern, Frauenkappelen.

Description:

Alt-Bubenberg Castle (Burg Alt-Bubenberg) is one of the medieval fortresses preserved in the territory of present-day Switzerland. Alt-Bubenberg is one of the main attractions of the city of Frauenkappelen, canton of Bern. The castle was built in the XII century, on top of a mountain range over the Alpine river Aare, flowing through Bern. What the castle looked like under the first owners is unknown: there are no remains of walls, only a moat and two mounds that fenced off the medieval fortification. The first mention of Alt-Bubenberg Castle dates back to 1241. It is possible that the possession served as the residence of the ancestors of the Bernese dynasty Babenberg. In the XIV century, the castle of Alt-Bubenberg, rising on the hillsides above Aare, near Frauenkapellen, was abandoned.
