Brandiz Castle
Switzerland, canton Bern, Lutzelflu.
Description:
Brandis Castle was located on the place where today the territory of Lutzelflu is located - the commune of the canton of Bern, Switzerland. From the point of view of defensive power, the castle occupied a very advantageous position - above the village, on a rocky cliff. To our time, the medieval fortress has not survived, only fragments of wall masonry and a moat remain visible. The castle, known since 1230, was the fiefdom of the Barons Brandis.
The fortification played the role of headquarters, and largely due to its strategic location, the Brandis family became influential, expanding their possessions in eastern Switzerland. In 1455, Brandis Castle changed owners - it was sold to the barons of Scharnachthal, later several times passed to other owners, until in 1607 it became the possession of Bern and the viceroy of Bern was placed within its walls. When the French invaded the country in 1798, the castle burned down.
