Dieszenberg Castle

Switzerland, canton of Bern, Oberdiezzbach.

Description:

The medieval castle of Diezzenberg is located on the territory of the former Swiss town of Aeschlen-Oberdiezzbach, now part of the municipality of Oberdiezzbach, canton of Bern. Diezenberg Castle was built in the XII century, it is located on a sheer rock in the Falkenflou mountains. From the fortresses to our time, the moats surrounding the castle have been preserved. The castle probably had stone walls, but no trace of masonry remained.

The first mention of Diezenberg (or Diezzenbach) occurs in 1218 in the description of the inheritance of Harmann IV. In 1331, the old feudal fortress was destroyed, and in its place Nikolaus von Diezzbach built the Old Castle (Alte Schloss) in 1546, and later, in 1668, Albert Wattenville built the New Oberdiezzbach Castle, whose architect was Jonas Favre. The palace in the style of Louis XIV has not undergone significant changes, and in our time remains the property of the Wattenville family.

The castle, Switzerland’s national heritage site, is open to tourists from April to October. The palace is also used for celebrations, and the garden is used as an open stage for jazz festivals.
