Erlach Castle
Switzerland, canton Bern, Erlach.
Description:
Erlach Castle is located in the municipality of the same name, the capital of the Erlach district of the canton of Bern, Switzerland. The fortification, built at the beginning of the XII century by Burhard Fenis to protect the upper part of the road leading to the lake, is located within the boundaries of the old town. Erlach was the most important fortress of the count family of Neuchatel, who inherited the castle from Count Fenis.
Later, the fortress, around which the settlement of Erlach grew, changed owners, and in 1474 came under the jurisdiction of the diocese of Bern that conquered it. The impregnable stone castle turned into the governor's palace-residence. Of the famous historical figures who lived there, it is enough to recall Niklaus Manuel Deutsch (governor from 1523 to 1528) and Johann Rudolf von Ballaigus (governor from 1776 to 1781).
Since 1874, the castle became the property of the canton of Bern, and to this day within the walls of Erlach Castle there is a boarding school for children without care.
