Tchorberg Castle
Krauchtchal, Bern, Switzerland
Description:
Thorberg Castle is the oldest castle in Switzerland. It was first mentioned in historical documents in 1175. After the death of the last knight Peter von Tchorberg, the castle took his name forever and in 1397 it became a Cartesian monastery.
In the XIX century, the castle simultaneously housed a shelter for the elderly and the poor, a psychiatric clinic and a prison. Thorberg Castle is only a prison. A chapel remains of the Cartesian monastery. Tourists, of course, are not allowed into this castle, but it is quite safe and interesting to see and photograph the castle from the outside. The historic Bern Museum houses frescoes from Thorberg Castle.
