Tellenburg Castle

Frutigen, canton of Bern, Switzerland

Description:

Tellenburg Castle is today a ruined castle. But this large historical building is interesting because it was once a real fairy-tale castle and a cult fortress. The castle was built by barons in the 12th century. It still has the best view of the charming miniature town of Frutigen in the canton of Bern.

In the Middle Ages, the castle was a place for Berne bailiffs and had an important state significance. Later, in the 19th century, it became an almshouse for the infirm and disabled. In 1885 there was a huge fire. Since then, the castle has not been restored, but you can not call it ruins, because the castle is visible from afar.

Visiting Tellenburg Castle, you may not be impressed by the luxury and beauty of this ancient architectural complex. But you will feel the spirit of history 800 years ago. Artist Harold Moody Vanderbilt captured this ruined castle in his 1929 painting, which can be seen today in the Harvard Museum of Art.
