A trip to the island of flowers - Mainau

Just over an hour’s drive from Zurich on Lake Constance is Mainau Island. This is one of the most beautiful places in Europe. To say that on the territory of the island planted just an unimaginable number of flowers, it is nothing to say. Whenever we come to this fabulous island, everything is always in bloom.
Here is a small list of colors: Since the beginning of March, snowdrops and other harbingers of spring begin to bloom. Then, from mid-March to mid-April, daffodils bloom. At the end of March, tulips and more than 3,000 orchids in more than 1,200 varieties begin to bloom. Throughout May, more than 200 varieties of rhododendrons and peonies bloom. From mid-May to the very end of autumn, various summer flowers and potted plants bloom throughout the island Also in mid-May, wild and bush roses begin to bloom. Then, from mid-June in the Italian Rose Garden, more than 500 varieties of roses continue to bloom on more than 3,000 bushes. And in the summer, from mid-July, hydrangeas begin to bloom. In their place from August to the end of October, dahlias are replaced.
In addition, the island has the second largest tropical pavilion of butterflies in Europe, in which they are collected more than 120 species. Some of them have a wingspan of 30 cm.
The exotic heart of the island is the palm pavilion with its more than 20 species of palm trees, orange trees and bird enclosures. Its area is 1270 sq. m. and a height of 17.4 m. It is made entirely of transparent acrylic glass.
A special place on the island is occupied by the palace and the beautiful church of St. Mary. The island still belongs to the descendants of the Swedish Prince Wilhelm and the Russian Grand Duchess Maria Pavlovna (granddaughter of the Russian Emperor Alexander II). I will tell you a very interesting story full of love intrigues and secrets about how the island was in their ownership.
It is very convenient to come to the island with children. For them there is a playground, the opportunity to ride a pony, feed a goat, pet a donkey, and other attractions. Also watch the work of the toy railway.
