Zurich Cathedral

Grossmunsterplatz, 8001 Zurich, Switzerland

Description:

The Cathedral of Zurich (Grossmunster) is an ancient monastery and cathedral in Zurich, the construction of which dates back to the Middle Ages.

Tradition says that Charlemagne himself ordered to build this majestic beauty of the cathedral, somehow learning that it is on this place that the relics of the two patrons of the city lie. The choirs of the cathedral are decorated with beautiful stained glass windows of the avant-garde artist Augusto Giacometti. Also amazing is the indoor gallery in the Romanesque style, in which you can find sculptures of the XII century.

This cathedral played a significant role in the formation of the religion of Protestantism in Switzerland. In this cathedral, in ancient times, Ulrich Zwingli preached a new Christian faith, calling for freedom in religion and the right of priests to marry.

Every Friday of the month at 22.00 a free tour with a visit to the tower takes place in the cathedral. The language of the tour is English.
